CALHOUN GOES VIRTUAL FOR 2020 COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY Decatur, AL – Calhoun Community College will honor its graduates on Friday, August 7, 2020, at 6:00 pm through a virtual commencement ceremony. The College’s Nursing Program will also hold its traditional Candlelighting ceremony from 10:00 am – 11:00 am. Both ceremonies are closed to only participating graduates and faculty. Although guests are not permitted, the event will be live-streamed at www.calhoun.edu/graduation.
According to the Calhoun Admissions Office, more than 1,900 students have qualified for graduation. Of that number, over 150 students plan

 Athens Red, White and Boom Drive-in Firework ShowThe Athens-Limestone Tourism has been given the go-ahead from the state fire marshal's office to have the annual Red, White & Boom display with one twist – Drive-In style viewing to meet the safety guidelines laid out by the Centers for Disease Control, the Governor’s Office and Alabama Public Health.

Because of COVID-19, KALB had to postpone the challenge, which began on March 14th. We have been given the green light to restart the program. Individuals and groups may participate. Rex Cheatham, a native of Decatur, Alabama, brings more than 44 years of experience in the education sector where he served as the Executive Director of the Governor’s Education Reform Commission. He also served as the Governor’s Education Liaison, UniServ Director for the Alabama Education Association of District 2, and as a Teacher and Supervisor for Attendance and Testing for Morgan County Schools. Variety Of Activities Created To Replace On-Site Earth Day & Outdoor EXPO  Due to COVID-19, the on-site Earth Day & Outdoor EXPO had to be cancelled; however, KALB has not cancelled the celebration! Several activities and contests have been created to engage students and adults.

Be aware of I-565E exit changes New Greenbrier ramp to open; detour for eastbound Mooresville exit  HUNTSVILLE — The Alabama Department of Transportation advises motorists of upcoming changes at two interchanges on Interstate 565 in Limestone County: The new eastbound Exit 3 offramp from I-565 to Greenbrier Road and Swancott Road will open Wednesday, June 17. Wednesday night, the contractor will begin setting barriers to temporarily close both eastbound ramps at Exit 2 (Mooresville Road).

2020! Need we say more. We want to let everyone know a quick update on the Freedom Festival this year. At the first of the year the committee met and decided not to move ahead with the event this year. Many factors weighed in on this decision but let me share just a couple. First, we just didn't feel a peace about putting it on this year in our hearts. Several of our originators have moved forward and we felt it may be time to just end it. Second, with the new school being built, several of the programs are working to raise money in the community to help fund a new playground for the kids as well as sport facility. These two things will not be provided in the building of the school so people are working real hard to raise the money and we didn't want to take away from this great movement. Now we are dealing with the Pandemic of Covid 19 and i'm sure glad we made the decision we did. It would be hard to ask...  Athens Red, White & Boom In July 2020 Making Efforts To Go Forward with In-Car Viewing and Additional RestrictionsThe Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association initially announced on June 11, 2020 that public safety in the face of COVID-19 outbreaks and the increasing occurrence was to take precedent this year after initial guidelines for fireworks displays outlined not only social distancing guidelines but additional mitigation efforts like contact tracing and limiting capacity – a difficult task for a small organization that would require strict attendance control to a limited number and turning away crowds once capacity was met.
Athens-Limestone Tourism is... Health and Safety First, No Red, White & Boom In July 2020 The Athens-Limestone community will have less bang and sparkle this 4th of July as the Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association opts to heed to the side of caution after reviewing the guidelines offered by the State of Alabama for large community gathering and several agencies requirement of a detailed mitigation and response plan that included limiting attendance, assuring people would willfully maintaining 6 feet social distancing within their cars for the duration of the event, having a process in place potentially to contract trace attendees in case of a COVID-19 outbreak, and other points that such a small organization couldn’t provide.
