Happy Cinco de MayoFeliz Cinco de Mayo Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a minor holiday in Mexico that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The Mexican Army, often viewed as an underdogs of the engagement, scurged the French and galvanized the army and supporter to continue to battle the French. Though the outcome and energy of the win at Puebla was short-lived and the French resumed power and stayed for several year's afterward, the day is marked as victory.
But in the United States, this minor Mexican holiday has come to represent a day to celebrate the food, heritage and culture of Mexico. Americans launch their own invasion of Mexican and Latino eateries and bars to partake of foods and libations - tacos, tequila, cervezas and more - in celebration of this nearly 160 year old victory. If you're looking to enjoy a little food with friends and family for Cinco de Mayo....
