Anna Gibbs is a local author who writes mystery books for young readers including The Mystery of the Lost Coin and The Mystery of the Healing Waters.  She has also written for the Athens News Courier on a variety of topics.  She is a life-long supporter of the American Girl Scouts from being a scout herself to being a co-leader of a troop.
When I was first told about the Piney Chapel American Farm Heritage Days' Tractor Ride I thought it would be more like a hayride. Then when I got there it was a tractor pulling little cars behind it with nice wooden bench seats and there were several of them like a train. It is an open air ride.

Say Hello To Doomsday Fireworks

Local Scream Attraction Introduces Summer Venture

"Doomsday Fireworks, we'll blow your mind!"
The people behind the seasonal scream attraction, Doomsday Haunts, are probably known by haunted house enthusiast and attendees for their raging monsters, mutants and undead wandering the dark and terrorizing  thrill seekers.   However, they are about to be known for a new seasonal venture, Doomsday Fireworks that is opening east of Athens on U.S. Highway 72 just in time for the Fourth of July.

When asked about their motivation for this new adventure, owners Eric and Hannah Riley shared:
"As much as we love to make people scream, jump, and run; we also enjoy making them stand in awe.  Fireworks have that affect on people.  For some it's emotional and other it's exciting.  Simply put, we enjoy fun, entertainment, shiny things that go "boom", and honoring our wonderful country."

Doomsday Fireworks comes with a bit of showmanship as well - anyone who knows Doomsday Haunt would expect nothing less.  Every night there is an opening ceremony that includes the National Anthem and the carrying of a 50-foot American flag by the actors.

Of course, don't forget to charge your cellphone or grab the camera because there are photo ops by Caustic the Uncle Sam Clown (one of the beloved giant body harness costumes that used at Doomsday Haunt) near the Humvee, Deuce and half truck and helicopter that are props of Doomsday Haunt as well.  Be sure to look for the new inflatable photobooth with small props and fun lighting near the photobooth to enhance your shots  too.

If you're looking to add some "boom" to your holiday plans you'll find 500 gram cakes like "One Bad Mother", "Fire Thief",  "Not in My Yard", "Widow Maker" and more.    Toss a few smaller cakes in  like "Blood, Sweat, and Tears", "Peace Out", "Merica" and more.   Lovers of the Excalibur and Excalibur reloadable lines will rejoice.  Death Squad 6" super shells - check!

Doomsday Fireworks also has fountains, multipacks, Roman Candles, rockets, sparklers, glow sticks, small glags, and novelty items too - something for everyone to add a little bang, boom, and sparkle to the night.

Want to find Doomsday Fireworks?

Head east on U.S. Highway 72 from Athens to 25570 U.S. Highway 72 across from Bethel Cemetery after Mooresville Road.   Look for the Deuce and Half truck with a big "Doomsday Firework" sign on the side.  You'll also see a Humvee, a helicopter, and a 10-foot tall Uncle Sam Clown named Caustic.  When you pull in there's a big Red, White, and Blue striped building.  They're hours are June 25th until July 1st: 9am - 10pm and
July 2nd-4th 8am- until we sell out. Midnight or later.

For more information find them on Faceook: DoomsdayFireworks

Happy Cinco de Mayo 2021!

Happy Cinco de Mayo

Feliz Cinco de Mayo
Picture
Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a minor holiday in Mexico that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.  The Mexican Army, often viewed as an underdogs of the engagement, scurged the French and galvanized the army and supporter to continue to battle the French. Though the outcome and energy of the win at Puebla was short-lived and the French resumed power and stayed for several year's afterward, the day is marked as victory.

But in the United States, this minor Mexican holiday has come to represent a day to celebrate the food, heritage and culture of Mexico.  Americans launch their own invasion of Mexican and Latino eateries and bars to partake of foods and libations - tacos, tequila, cervezas and more - in celebration of this nearly 160 year old victory.

If you're looking to enjoy a little food with friends and family for Cinco de Mayo....

National Girl Scout Day

March 12, 2021

March 12 marks the birthday of the Girl Scouts in the United State commemorating the first-ever troop formed by Juliette Daisy Gordon Low. Remember that name because it’s part of the inspiration and motivation for local Girl Scout Troop 1922 to sell cookies with a mission – and a great way to give back to the young ladies who keep giving to the community.

Leaders and Community...

The Girl Scouts is about empowering young ladies to develop their full potential; relate and build connections with others by honing skills and providing respect; develop values and stewardship that guide their actions and decision making and contribute to the improvement of our society and community by utilizing their abilities, leadership skills, cooperating with others and enriching their lives and...

National Tartar Sauce Day

February 19, 2021

Falling on the first Friday following Lent – National Tartar Sauce Day calls on you to celebrate this simple condiment that adds a twang to your fish and seafood platters. The day owes it’s origin to the Frisch Family Big Boy of Cincinnati Ohio in 2017. Dave Frisch’s signature in-house made Tartar Sauce set the restaurant onto the scene when the Big Boy sandwich that normally used Thousand Island dressing was replaced with Tarter Sauce – make it a regular favorite of many and placing this condiment on the menu and eventually a staple in home cupboards as well.

Topping off the Frisch’s Big Boy sandwiches isn’t the only unconventional use of the seafood compatriot. Tartar Sauce non-traditional applications including...
