Bell To Toll At 11th Hour of 11th Day of 11th Month To Mark 100 Years Since End of WWI![]() Lest we forget.... It's been 100 years since the signing of the Armistice Agreement, the Treaty of Versailles on November 11, 1918 at the 11th hour that ended World War I, the "Great War" also known as the "War to End All Wars". Marking the anniversary of the signing on the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month... ... a ringing of the bell to mark World War I ending on the lawn of the Limestone County Courthouse (downtown Athens) at 11:00AM will occur.
The historic bell that formerly graced the tower of the Limestone County Courthouse, recovered during recent renovations and installed on the Courthouse lawn, will toll in honor of the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month and will be rung by a Marine Corp Sergeant. The public is welcome to attend and commemorate the 100 years since the Armistice Signing. It's estimated that over 16 million soldiers and civilians were left dead after World War I. The Armistice Agreement, the Treaty of Versailles, reshaped the face of Europe and its people. It left twelve families of Limestone County to mourn the loss of their loved ones and these we should pause and acknowledge for their sacrifice as the bell tolls.
