Limestone County Commission – Tourism Proclaim June 1st National Trail Day for County Limestone County Commission Chairman Collin Daly and the Athens-Limestone County Tourism proudly proclaim National Trail Day in Limestone County Alabama celebrating the tremendous collection of trails and their contributions to citizen’s quality of life and the community’s economy. Collin Daly signed the proclamation for the June 1st day that invites citizens and visitors to enjoy the bounty of Limestone County trails. Limestone County is home to ... ... over 25 tracks and trails and continues to grow through the development of new trails and interest. Visitors from around the world have visited community trails like the Limestone County Elk River Canoe and Kayak Trail, Noah Bike Trail, Limestone County Civil War Driving Tour, Columns and Culture: Antebellum Driving Tour, Marbut Bend and the extremely popular Richard Martin Rails-to-Trails. It has been estimated that 40,000 visitors a year choose to trek, pedal or horseback the Richard Martin Rails-to-Trails that stretches from Athens’ Mitchell-Coffman Park passing through the heart of the Town of Elkmont and finishing at the little clapboard church in Veto, Alabama. Visitors to the trail often shop downtown Elkmont antique stores and boutiques, visit Belle Chevre creamery and make a purchase, or dine at one of Elkmont’s eateries. RVers love to pull into Mill Creek RV Park and hit the trail that’s right at their temporary backdoor. This Saturday, the Elkmont Hound Dog Half Marathon will actually take to the Rails-to-Trails and adjacent roads of the community to run the 13.1 miles trek. Runners from all over the Southeast will come to run the race made famous by Bloodhound on the loose, Ludivine. Kayakers will be hitting the water of the Elk River trail this Saturday as well as with local outfitter, Fort Hampton Outfitters has been booking trips steadily. The Class 1 waterway with towering cliffs, amazing scenery and wildlife bring kayakers from all over the United States. It’s not unusual to find Minnesota license plates among the Tennessee and Alabama plates on many of the vehicles coming to town to paddle. “Trails are such a big draw for our community,” says Cayce Lee of Athens-Limestone County Tourism. “We send out trail brochures to people around the United States all year long. Some of the biggest request we have for trail information is for our Elk River Canoe and Kayak Trail, Noah Bike Trail, Athens-Limestone African-American Heritage Trail and the Columns and Culture: Antebellum Driving Trail. People are coming to Limestone County, staying in our hotels, dining at our eateries and restaurants, fueling their vehicles, spending time in the community and then falling in love with our history, heritage and people,” Cayce continued.
