Calhoun Community College to host “Explore Manufacturing” event in recognition of National Manufacturing DayDecatur, AL – Calhoun Community College will host “Explore Manufacturing”, Thursday, October 4, 2018, from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm at the college’s Decatur campus, with optional tours of local industry planned from 1:00 – 2:30 pm. The event is Calhoun’s local observation of National Manufacturing Day (October 5) and helps to support the state of Alabama’s Dream It. Do it initiative, designed to promote awareness of careers in manufacturing. During Thursday’s event... ... Calhoun will host more than 700 high school students from the Decatur City, Morgan County, Limestone County, Madison County, Madison City, and Huntsville City school systems, providing an opportunity for these students to network with employers and current Calhoun students working in various industries. A discussion panel with Calhoun students majoring in a variety of technical programs along with alumni who are now employed within their industry will give the high school students a first-hand account of opportunities currently available in manufacturing and the educational and training needed for these jobs. Students will also have an opportunity to engage in hands-on activities during a program tour of Calhoun’s Industrial Maintenance, Welding, Design Drafting, Machine Tool, HVAC, Aerospace, Automotive, and Process Technology departments. “Calhoun has participated in the observation of national Manufacturing Day since its inception several years ago,” commented John Holley, dean for technologies. “We are always excited when we have an occasion to host our local high school students and to talk with them about all of the great, high-wage career opportunities that exist within our region and how Calhoun can help prepare them to successfully enter the workforce,” Holley added. Local manufacturing companies have stepped up to partner with this event by hosting industry tours at their facilities. These local industry partners include Sonoco, Bruderer Machinery, Adtran, 3M Company, Federal Mogul, Carpenter Technology, CSFCO, Frito Lay, Daikin, PCA, Polaris, In’Tech, and GE Appliances, A Haier Company. Not only will students be able to learn more about educational opportunities leading to in-demand technical careers, they will also see that education put into action. The college is also sponsoring lunch for each of the students participating in the event. Manufacturing Day is observed annually on the first Friday of October and is held to help change the perception of the manufacturing environment. Local schools, colleges, and industries collaborate to present to students the current modern manufacturing technology and the careers available. On National Manufacturing Day, more than 1,600 American manufacturers will open their doors and take up the important work of inspiring young people to pursue careers in manufacturing and engineering. Today’s science, technology, engineering, and math graduates will power the next chapter of American production and innovation, and harnessing their potential is an economic imperative.
