CALHOUN TO HOST NOTED CHILDREN’S AUTHOR JOHN DURHAMDecatur, AL -- Calhoun Community College’s Division of Humanities and Social Sciences will host noted children’s author John Durham for a free presentation on Monday, July 17, 3:00-4:00 p.m., in the Multipurpose Room, located in the college’s new building on the Huntsville campus. Durham, director of the Baku International School in Azerbaijan, based the book ... ... The Belling on a story told to him by his grandmother. The protagonists, Winnie and Lloyd (based on Durham’s grandparents) participate in a tradition that stood for many years in their hometown of Sunbury, Ohio, as well as many other small towns. Students helped Durham revise the book.
The Belling is not Durham’s first book. As a teacher, he led his students as they wrote and published The Jack Winn Story, a historical work based on a Tuscaloosa former slave, and The Adventures of Rocket the Turtle. Durham grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and attended Otterbein College. After graduation, he started his overseas teaching career in Honduras, where he met his wife. After graduate school at The University of Alabama, he worked at The Capitol School in Tuscaloosa, a school based on Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. From there, his career took him to countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, Central Asia, and China. Although he enjoys his work as an author, Durham is always first and foremost a teacher. He encourages teachers and parents to help instill a love of reading and writing in their children. Mr. Durham’s philosophy is that education must be meaningful and memorable. For more information on the presentation, call 256-306-2756. The event is free and open to the public.
