Celebrate Our Stories with April Saturday Walks in Limestone County

​Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association proudly announces the return of free, guided walking tours beginning each Saturday only in the month of April. Residents and visitors are invited to take part in a casual stroll through historic Athens, Elkmont and Mooresville and learn about their history and heritage as Limestone County, City of Athens, Town of Mooresville and the State of Alabama continue to mark their bicentennial birthday in 2019 with the theme, “Our Stories”.

The approximately one-hour walking tours are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on...

April 6th, 13th , 20th,  and 27th at the Athens’ Visitor Center meeting room, located at 100 North Beaty Street in Athens,  with check in beginning at 9:45 a.m.  In Mooresville, the walks will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will meet at the Post Office on Lauderdale Street each Saturday at 9:45 a.m. for a peak inside the oldest operating United States Post Office in Alabama. 

In Elkmont, the walk will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Elkmont Depot of Railroad Street.

UPDATE:   
April 20th will be the book launch for "Reflections of Elkmont" at the start of the Walking Tour.  Attendees will enjoy Sassafras Tea brewed from the roots gathered from the Rails-to-Trails.   

The first edition of the printing has been affixed with the seal of the Town of Elkmont and will auctioned to the highest bidder.

To take home a copy, please bring cash, check or money order for $50.00 (tax included).



New this year in Athens, are the addition of Attraction Partners who will be opening their doors for guided tours.  The Donnell House, The Governor George Houston Library and Home and the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives will welcome guest as part of the Limestone County April Historic Walks series.   Attendees interested in joining the Attraction Partners for tours are asked to check-in at the Athens-Limestone Visitors Center at 9:45 a.m.  and will be given special instruction and passes to access the tours for free.

Knowledgeable guides will escort participants through historic neighborhoods and landmarks where they will share the history of the city including history of local businesses and families, architectural styles of the homes and other colorful moments in the community’s history.   

Mooresville is the oldest town in the State of Alabama with the oldest continuous working post office. You can tour the six streets of homes and the famous 1818 Farm during your tour. The entire one-square mile town of Mooresville is on the National Historical Registry.

The four areas offered for guided tours in Athens are:
Historic Beaty District                                                     Athens City Cemetery
Historic Downtown Square                                          Athens State University
 
UPDATE:  
APRIL 20th will host a special event following the Athens City Cemetery tour.  The Sons of Confederate Veterans will be holding a Confederate Memorial Day Service to recognize the service and sacrifice of the soldiers who served.  The service is free and open to the public from 11:00AM-12:00PM.


APRIL 20th will also have Athens State University hosting the Arbor Day Festival from 1:00PM-5:00PM where they will offer a Tree Tour of the grounds. 

Reservations are not required and tours are held rain or shine. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes for walking on a variety of surfaces.  Tours take from one to two hours to complete.

Alabama 200 PastPort holders of the book or app are encouraged to make plans to visit Limestone County’s featured locations of the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives, the Mooresville Post Office, and the Donnell House.
