Smokin’ Railroad Street BBQ Cookoff Heating Things Up in Elkmont The Elkmont Lions Club’s Smokin’ Railroad Street BBQ Backyard Division Cookoff will heat things up in downtown Elkmont, Alabama June 21 and 22nd when over 23 teams come to town to compete in Alabama Barbecue Association Event and Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event. New this year, Elkmont is one of the Six City Backyard Shootout cities bringing in some new teams competing for chances at two titles. Spectators are in for a treat Friday... ... June 21st at 6:00PM with a free concert featuring Sweet Sue Band from Rogersville. Bring a camp or lawn chair and settle in for an evening of music into the night, ending around 10:00PM. Come early and enjoy the shops, eateries and vendors. Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) judges from all over Alabama ,Florida, and Tennessee will be in Elkmont for the heated competition featuring Backyard Division teams. Teams will be competing for titles and $4000.00 in prize money in Chicken (including Kosher Chicken and Cornish Hens), Ribs (bone in or bone out but no country style cuts), and Pork (Boston Butt, Picnic or Whole Shoulder) divisions. Spectators are welcome to come speak with the teams as they cook but don’t expect them to give up any secrets to their sauces and rubs though. The prizes and titles will be awarded around 3:30PM after the KCBS judges take a look at the team’s presentations and rate them for appearance, tenderness/texture, and taste. Spectators are welcome to the festival at 8:00AM on Saturday, June 22. A variety of vendors will be at the show with items from small business to artisan goods to peruse. If all the sights and smells of tasty barbecue being cooked gets your mouth to watering while you’re perusing the vendors, good news – there will be food vendors on hand including the crowd favorite, The Smokin’ Box with BBQ, Brisket, and Cajun Sausage. Plates with house-made sides will be available for purchase while the sides last. Sandwiches and Nachos will be on the menu for those looking for something different. Cool down with sweet tea, house-made lemonade or shaved ice – all available starting Friday, June 21st at 4:00PM. Other food vendors to tempt your taste buds during the festival will be C & C Eats and Treats from Florence, Snow Biz from Hazel Green and the Mary Jane Hobbs Team offering Snow Cones and Cotton Candy. Spectators will have a chance to purchase tickets for a Snap-On Tool Box with the Elkmont Volunteer Fire Department to take home themselves at the end of the event.
