Athens-Limestone County Marks Martin Luther King Jr Day And His Legacy With A Variety of Events![]() Martin Luther King, Jr. was an advocate for African-Americans during the United State Civil Rights Movements. Often considered the architect of Civil Rights Movement's "Peaceful Protests", he often led marches, sit-ins, bus boycotts and spoke often of a day when all people would be equal - no matter gender, color, or other notable difference. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life tragically ended in assassination in Memphis, TN ... ...on April 4, 1968. The news of his passing rippled around the world. The day to commemorate his contributions to humanity was signed into law on November 2, 1983 as the King Holiday Bill. Following the signing of the bill into law by President Ronald Reagan, King's widow, Coretta Scott King, remarked, "This is not a black holiday; it's a people's holiday." Limestone County Alabama organizations mark the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. annually with a variety of activities and this year, as part of the Alabama Bicentennial, the stories are part of that celebration. The Limestone County NAACP is encourage a "Week of Service" throughout the community and share pictures via Twitter using the hastag #MLKServALC. Below is a collection of Martin Luther King Jr. Day commemorations as well as two upcoming African-American History Month events. Monday, January 21, 2019 EventsKing Unity March with lineup on the west side of the Limestone County Courthouse (Jefferson Street in Athens) for anyone interested in marching in unity to the Limestone County Event Center (114 West Pryor Street in Athens) starting at 9:00AM. To be followed with the annual King Program at 9:30AM. Free and open to the public. Martin Luther King Jr Program at the Limestone County Event Center (114 West Pryor Street in Athens) starting at 9:30AM with local student art displays and essays inspired by King's messages as well as music and presentations of awards. The theme this year will reflect "A Stable Message in Changing Times". Light refreshments will be served following the program. Free and open to the public. Awarding of the Dr. C. Eric Lincoln Humanitarian Award will be made and music by Round Island Creek Male Chorus. Friday, January 25, 20191st Annual CommUNITY Breakfast at the Athens State University Center for Lifelong Learning (121 South Marion Street in Athens) starting at 8:30AM with featured speaker Dr. Carolyn McKinstry, Supervisor of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church Bombing Birmingham. Free, donations welcome. Monday, February 4, 2019Call for Artist-2019 with Athens State University Library and Archives (West Pryor Street and Elkton Street in Athens) to North Alabama amateur artist and student artist of all grade levels to submit for consideration artwork reflecting the African-American experience in North Alabama and Limestone County and Athens State University focused submissions encouraged. Mediums accepted: drawing, painting, three-dimensional sculptures, photography and mixed media. Required Submission Items: Digital images of completed artwork, or artwork plan to be completed before showcase event. Artwork title, medium, dimensions, cost (if for sale) and explanation of hanging/presentation requirements. Brief artist’s statement, biography, email, and phone number.
