Athens, Al - The Mike Chapman Memorial Music Scholarship for 2019 was presented May 16th, 2019 to Diva Nicole Rigney, a Clements High School graduate who will be attending Auburn University this fall, and performing in their marching band. Diva was a Clements band student for seven years playing clarinet, serving as the marching section leader and the concert band section leader. She received...

... the Most Outstanding Woodwind Award for four years and the Patrick S. Gilmore Award, and was a member of the Limestone County Honor Band. The presentation was made during the May Senior Lunch Matinee at Yesterdays Event Center Athens, Al. In attendance were Chapman’s wife Connie and daughter Allison, members of the Rigney family, and 230 lunch matinee guests.

Chapman was an Athens Limestone County native and Clements High 1970 graduate who lost his battle with cancer in 2016. He was one of the most sought after Nashville studio musicians for the past two decades and a member of Garth Brooks studio band the “G-Men”. Yesterdays Event Center, where Chapman had performed over a dozen times in the past few years, created the scholarship in Mike’s memory in 2016, with Rigney being the third recipient. The $1000.00 Scholarship will be presented each year to a Clements High School graduating senior who is continuing their pursuit of music excellence at a college or university of their choice.
