Duck and Run 5K Registration OpenThe Duck and Run 5K will take place on Saturday, September 21st at 7:00 a.m. in Athens. This is the 16th year for this race which supports the projects and programs of Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful, and is one of their most important fundraisers. Early registration is... ... $20. Late and race day registration will be $25. Registration forms are available at the KALB office at 125 East St. in Athens, or online registration can be found at www.Raceroster.com. For race details or a printable form, visit www.KALBCares.com and click on the EVENTS tab.
The Duck and Run 5K is a great race for both seasoned runners and beginners. The course is mildly challenging and will take runners through tree-lined streets and past antebgellum homes in the Athens Historic Districts as well as around the Courthouse Square. Start and finish points will be at Big Spring Memorial Park in Athens. The first 300 runners will receive a goody bag and a Duck and Run t-shirt provided by many generous sponsors. American Leakless Company, the event’s Diamond Duck sponsor, will be providing an aluminum water bottle to the first 300 registrants. Excellent refreshments will be available after the race in and around the historic Athens Visitors Center, which was built in 1906 and served as the Athens Utilities Building. Cash prizes and trophies in several age categories will be awarded along with gift cards from Fleet Feet, another very generous supporter of this 5K. This race has one of the lowest registration fees, and KALB offers a special low registration fee to local cross-country teams who might want to use this race for practice. Anyone interested in registering a cross-country team should contact KALB for more information. Race Supports Environmental Education Because of many amazing sponsors, every penny of the registration fees goes directly to support the KALB organization’s projects and programs. Although KALB has a variety of activities, the most important is education. KALB staff love to be invited into classrooms from preschool through 6th grade. By invitation, Sparky and The Talking Tree will visit the younger students to discuss litter, recycling, and the importance of trees to our world. KALB has a variety of classroom presentations that are geared toward any age group. A student favorite is a game of Environmental Jeopardy where student teams compete against each other. Speakers are also available for adult groups and clubs. Not A Runner? Volunteers are always needed and appreciated for this event. KALB would love to have cheerleaders, band members, and other volunteers cheering runners along the parade route, as well as others to guard intersections and guide runners along the course. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact KALB for details.
