MSNHA opens photo contest

FLORENCE – Both professional and amateur photographers are eligible to enter Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area’s photo contest this year. Prizes include dinner at the Marriott Shoals and the chance to have your photo used in national promotions.

Entry forms and guidelines...

... for the contest, which celebrates the people and places of northwest Alabama, are at http://msnha.una.edu/. Deadline is Dec. 3.

“Last year we judged both amateurs and professionals together,” said MSNHA director Carrie Barske, "but we had so many outstanding entries that we realized we needed separate divisions, so this year amateurs will be judged against amateurs and professionals against professionals."

Entries for the contest must be digital, taken within the MSNHA's six counties (Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone and Morgan) and submitted by the person who took the photo, Barske added. Contest categories are "Life in the MSNHA," Native American heritage and music.

"The 'Life in the MSNHA' category is for images featuring our natural beauty, cultural heritage and historic places," Barske said, "That includes pictures of MSNHA's people doing what they do best--enjoying outdoor recreation, creating innovative art and enhancing the everyday experience of living in the Tennessee River valley. It's the category for expressing what it means to live in northwest Alabama."

A top winner in each division--amateur and professional--will be chosen in each of the three categories for a total of six winners. Two grand-prize winners will be chosen from those six, and they'll each receive dinner at the Marriott Shoals 360 Grille, in Florence. The remaining four winners will receive dinner at Swampers Bar and Grille, also at the Mariott Shoals. All winning photographs will be featured on the MSNHA website & social media platforms, and any entry might be used in MSNHA promotions.

A program of the National Park Service, National Heritage Areas recognize regions throughout the country that help tell America’s story. The MSNHA is hosted by the University of North Alabama and focuses on the themes of music, Native Americans and the Tennessee River.

“We hope people will use this contest as inspiration to discover MSNHA’s treasures,” Barske said. “From outdoor recreation and beautiful landscapes to our American Indian heritage to northwest Alabama’s continuing role and influence in today’s music industry, our area is known around the world. There’s no better way to tell our local stories than through our own local images.”
