CALHOUN COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO OFFER SPECIALTY CDL TRAINING COURSE FOR WOMEN THIS SPRING

Truck drivers are in high demand, and the career is growing in popularity among women. In an effort to meet the demand, Calhoun Community College is conducting a special CDL training course geared toward women.

“Truck driving women are the face of the future, and as companies encounter a shortage of drivers, more women that possess a CDL is essential,” commented Mary Smith, CDL Instructor. “Calhoun’s Workforce Solutions (CWS) team decided what better time than now to provide the necessary training to help fill those industry gaps,” said Smith. Women comprise...

... approximately 6% of the driver population. The US trucking industry has a current driver shortage of approximately 48,000 drivers. Trucking companies provide great benefits packages, good pay, and even tuition reimbursement as incentives to attract drivers. The mean wage for a commercial driver is $42,500.

Women that choose truck-driving careers often team drive with a spouse or friend. The earning potential increases when working as a team, often more than $100,000 annually. Others are empty nesters who are looking for something to do, or millennials looking for additional income and the opportunity to travel. Truck driving also attracts younger women, providing a respectable living with many advantages. Some advantages to becoming a truck driver include: the opportunity to travel cross-country, solitude, peace and quiet while working, better than average pay with benefits as well as solid job security.

Calhoun’s 160-hour training course will be held on Monday – Thursday, beginning April 2 – 26, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Calhoun’s Decatur campus.  The course is designed to prepare women for the written and road tests for a Class A or B license. Various trucking company recruiters meet with the class to provide information regarding job opportunities and to answer questions.  “This is the first time Calhoun has offered CDL training for women, and we hope to receive a positive response from those in the community interested in obtaining their CDL and pursuing a career in truck driving,” commented Dr. Jim Klauber, Calhoun President.

The training cost is $2,950.00. Workforce Investment Opportunity Act (WIOA) funding is available to those whom qualify. Contact your local Alabama Career Center for more information concerning WIOA eligibility.
The deadline for registration is March 22, 2018. Please contact Calhoun’s CDL office for more information at 256-260-2462, or visit our website at www.calhoun.edu/cdl to register today!
