City of Athens Marks Bicentennial

The City of Athens Alabama is marking its bicentennial during the Alabama's Bicentennial celebrations -- 2017-2019.

The City of Athens will be marking it's birthday early though...

as Athens was recognized by the newly formed Alabama Territorial Assembly on November 19, 1818 whereas the state wasn't recognized until December 14, 1819 -- an entire year later.

City of Athens with the help of local artist have embarked on a unique way to celebrate with "Athens Rocks" and artistic and social interactive venture leaving decorated rocks around the city to be found and shared.
