Historical Markers

Athens Alabama and Limestone County is rich in history and tradition.  Enjoy traveling throughout this region in North Alabama and discovering places that played an important part in shaping our community as well as the region. For example, did you know that Limestone County is actually older than the state of Alabama? The Alabama Territorial Legislature named the county for the limestone found in the creeks.
