A dose of humor to fight cancer and support the arts in Athens

Misspelled words in newspaper ads and television weather reports are among the fodder for a local television anchor.

Questionable social media posts and news stories about deer heads injuring homeowners are also part of the collection for WHNT-19 Anchor Greg Screws. He will share his comedic view on crazy news stories, headlines, pictures, social media and more to support two local causes, the City of Athens Relay for Life Team and Athens Arts League.

The second annual Greg Screws: Yes, I’ll Comment event sponsored by CDPA is...

Friday, July 28, at 6:30 p.m. at Athens State University’s McCandless Hall. At 6 p.m., members of Southside Church of Christ’s Youth Vocal Ministry Camp comprised of students from across the United States will perform.

Tickets are $10 each and are available at Athens City Hall, High Cotton Arts or online at EventBrite.

“We had a blast at this event last year,” Screws said. “And if you were there, you remember the moment that had me gasping for air. I would love to see you, and the event helps two great causes.”

At the 2016 event, organizers planted an actress in the audience to scream at Screws for using a newspaper article as part of his show. The actress said the article included her niece in the picture, and his comments were out of line. Screws and part of the audience were initially stunned until the actress began to laugh.

“The arts and humor remind us that cancer will not take our motivation, our creativity or our laughter,” said City of Athens Relay for Life Captain and Athens Arts League board member Holly Hollman. ““Relay for Life fights to heal, advocate and educate. Art, as well, serves to heal, advocate and educate.”

Relay campaigns support the American Cancer Society, which funds support services like Hope Lodge in Birmingham, education programs and research for the fight against cancer. Athens Arts League will use proceeds from this year’s show to support its Scout Music House renovation project that will provide a music venue for the community.

New to the show this year are short skits Screws has created to highlight the peculiar side of life. One skit he based on a deer head injury during an earthquake.
