​The Elkmont Lions Club’s Smokin’ Railroad Street BBQ Backyard Division Cookoff will heat things up in downtown Elkmont, Alabama June 21 and 22nd when over 23 teams come to town to compete in Alabama Barbecue Association Event and Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event.   New this year, Elkmont is one of the Six City Backyard Shootout cities bringing in some new teams competing for chances at two titles.

This summer, local shops and businesses will be open on the second Sunday of every month in June-August to promote the downtown area during the weekends.
 
After speaking to local merchants, Athens Main Street believes that this will be a great way to encourage more people to the downtown area to shop and attract the Sunday lunch crowds to stay longer in Downtown Athens.
 
Athens Main Street Executive Director, Tere Richardson says, “A stroll around the Square, some shopping and a great meal is a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Come and enjoy Downtown!”

New U.S. 72 Signal To Flash For Next Week

The Alabama Department of Transportation advises motorists that the traffic signal installed last week at U.S. 72 and Burgreen Road/Dupree Worthey Road is now in flash mode.
​
The signal will remain in flash mode for about a week to alert drivers to its presence before normal operations begin. During this interim period, through traffic on U.S. 72 will receive flashing yellow lights indicating caution, and motorists on Burgreen Road/Dupree Worthey Road and those using the left turn lanes on U.S. 72 will receive flashing red signals, indicating they must stop and yield.
