Athens-Limestone Gift Idea:
Grits & Gunpowder

The Donnell House, once the home of Reverend Robert Donnell, sits atop a hill just south of downtown Athens among school buildings and towering trees that stand like sentinels as if they were guarding the history, heritage and culture the home has witnessed.  The white clapboard house with wrapping porch and eclectic collection of antiques has served as the Donnell Family home, a boys' school,  home to principals and superintendents of Athens City School before taking on life in its present roll of event venue and historical purveyors of local history, heritage, and tales.

One option for enjoying the tales and history is the Donnell House cookbook, “Grits & Gunpowder” which is available in softback just perfect for the cook or historian in your family or circle of friends.   It’s part...

...history book/part cookbook featuring stories of the Civil War, including many that are tied to North Alabama with old-fashioned recipes such as Jeff Davis Pie and Mary Lincoln Cake interspersed between.  The recipes have been modernized for today’s cook to make it easier to enjoy the flavors of yester-year.

All proceeds from “Grits & Gunpowder” go directly to the Donnell House for ongoing maintenance and restoration projects. The price is $15.00 each and is authored by Donnell House Board Member and Donnell decedent Jacque Reeves.
