Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention Returns Oct 4 - 6 in Athens

The "Granddaddy of all Fiddlers Conventions" returns to Athens State University for it's 52nd year of music, food, and arts and craft vendors as the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention comes to Athens, Alabama October 4-6, 2018.

... Flatt Lonesome from Murfreesboro, TN. No stranger to the Bluegrass circuit, Flatt Lonesome is deeply-rooted in bluegrass.  They'll move you with their soul-stirring gospel renditions, energize you with their country flair, and keep you tapping your toe with their progressive, yet traditional jams.

You find them center-stage in front of Founder's Hall on the Main Stage on Thursday starting at 7:00PM.  The concert is free and open to the public.

Friday, October 5

Friday sees the beginning of competitions with registration for Harmonica, Mandolin, Bluegrass Banjo, Dobro, Dulcimer and Old Time Singing opening at 12:00PM.  Competition for these categories will start at 7:00PM.

Attendees will find the gates open at 8:00AM with a variety of arts and crafts to peruse.  The Fiddler's Convention and Delmore Brothers Museums will be open to ticket holders starting at 10:00AM in the bottom floor of McCandless Hall. A variety of tasty treats will also be available as you enjoy the music competitions and the day's headliners.

The big show happens twice on Friday with Rhonda Vincent and the Rage taking the main stage in front of Founder's Hall at 4:00PM and again at 6:00PM.

Saturday, October 6

Saturday, October 6th has the gates opening at 8:00AM.  Registration for Beginning Fiddler & Guitar Finger picking starts at 7:45AM.  The registration for  Apprentice Fiddler,  Old Time Banjo, Classic Old Time Fiddler, Guitar Flat Picking, Senior Fiddler, Bluegrass Band, Junior Fiddler, Old Time Band, Intermediate Fiddler, and Buck Dancing starts at 8:30AM.

The Finals for Senior Fiddler, Classic Old Time Fiddler, Bluegrass Band, Junior Fiddler, Old Time Band, Intermediate Fiddler, Buck Dancing and the Fiddle Off will begin at 8:00PM that night.

The food and arts and crafts vendors will be on hand  to occupy you between sets.  The Delmore Brother and Fiddler's Museum on the bottom floor of McCandless Hall will be open to peruse the history and admission is included with your ticket.  Debby Delmore, the daughter of Alton Delmore, will be in the museum to meet and greet people throughout the afternoon.

The big draw of the day will the evening's headliner as Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder take the main stage in front of Founder's Hall at 6:00PM.

Tips for your visit...

  • Not pets allowed inside the gates
  • Bring a lawn or camp chair to enjoy the music and competitions
  • Rain location will be in Carter Gymnasium at the east end of campus
  • Free camping for RVs - no hookups in the grassy areas
  • Gate prizes require you to be present to win
  • No coolers
  • Gate locations:
    • Founder's Hall - 3
      • Gate 3 will be the only gate taking credit cards
    • Alumni Fountain - 2
    • Pryor & Elkton Streets - 1
    • McCain Hall - 1
  • Tickets:
    • Thursday: Free
    • Friday: $15.00
      Children 12 and under free with paid adult
    • Saturday: $15.00
      Children 12 and under free with paid adult
    • Weekend Pass $20.00  -- BEST BUY
  • Parking
    • Parking on campus is free
      • College Street Center on Hobbs Street
      • Chasteen Hall on Clinton Street
    • Local homes may provide spaces for a fee
    • Private entities may provide lot spaces for a fee
    • Please be mindful that violators will be towed at their expense for illegally parking in cordoned off areas as well as unpermitted parking on private land
    • Handicap Parking is accessed off Hobbs Street near McCain Hall
  • Road closures will impact the area of the campus (please see map below)
