The greater Limestone County remains rich in antebellum (1812-1861), late nineteenth century and early twentieth century architecture. The trail is a driving tour featuring 24 antebellum homes, three antebellum churches, antebellum college, two working antebellum working cotton plantations, antebellum post office and antebellum stagecoach inn and tavern. Rails to Trails
Rails to Trails - The 10.3-mile trail winds its way past the site of the Battle of Sulphur Creek Trestle. The trail offers a back-to-nature greenway for hikers, bikers, joggers, bird watchers, horseback riders as well as naturalist, student and historians. The trail head is in downtown Elkmont. The trail hours are daylight to sunset. No motorized vehicles permitted on trail.
Offering five easy in and out sites. The trail total 21.9 miles. As you are floating down the beautiful Elk River in the spring, the white dogwood and redbud tree, blooming along the river banks, are breathtaking so you may want to bring your camera. Click here for more

Athens Recreation Loop
The Athens Recreation loop is great for walking, taking a stroll with the family, or just getting your exercise. The circuit is contained, 1.53 miles and stretches from the Athens Recreation Center to Swan Creek Park. Learn more here

April Saturday Walks
The Limestone County April Historic Walks are part of a Alabama Department of Tourism statewide initiative that encourages the exploration of communities and their history each Saturday in April. Learn more here
The Athens Haunt Walk is hosted annually in October by the Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association and departs from the Athens-Limestone Visitors Center. This pre-sale ticket only event, is a volunteer-guided walking tour through the darker history of the historic districts featuring select home and tales from the book, "Spirits of Athens" by Shane Black.
